ABC Radio Melbourne audiences are set to get an extra day of Sammy J in 2024 with the host returning to 5 days a week in Breakfast next year.
Current Friday Breakfast host Charlie Pickering will finish this year before spending 2024 focusing on his other commitments.
Pickering said: “I have loved spending Friday breakfast with the wonderful listeners of ABC Melbourne and the great city I am proud to call home. The Brekkie team are the best in the business, and I’d like to thank them for bringing us together this year. I’m looking forward to being back on ABC Melbourne radio in 2024 – and if you can’t wait ‘til then, join me over on ABC TV from 20 December as we wrap up 2023 on The Yearly with Margaret Pomeranz, Roy & HG, Rhys Nicholson, referendums and mushroom recipes.”
Pickering will present his final Breakfast program on Friday December 8.
Of returning to the schedule full-time, Sammy J said: “I want to thank Charlie for helping restore my work life balance and bringing such joy to the show this year. But I still wake up at 4:30am on Fridays anyway, so this was the easiest decision of my life. I can’t wait to hit 2024 in full flight, five J’s a week baby!”
ABC Radio Melbourne Manager Dina Rosendorff said: “The amazing response to Sammy J’s marathon 24-hour broadcast for ABC Gives last week has really highlighted just how much love our audience has for him, so we’re delighted he’ll be with us for Breakfast five days a week again next year.”
“I’d like to wish Charlie all the best – he’s been a wonderful addition to ABC Radio Melbourne this year and while he will certainly be missed, we’re looking forward to having him pop up on our airwaves from time-to-time next year.”
Other returning presenters include Ali Moore, who will helm Drive in the new year after taking over from Raf Epstein and quickly developing a strong rapport with listeners.
Trevor Chappell will also continue on Afternoons next year, much to the delight of ABC Melbourne’s audience.
Raf will return to Mornings in 2024 after taking on the role in September following 11 years on Drive.
Michael Pavlich will continue to present Overnights into the new year. All other ABC Melbourne presenters including Matt Preston, Alice Zaslavsky, Lisa Leong, Richelle Hunt and David Astle will be back for 2024.
Manager Dina Rosendorff said: “Our 2024 schedule is testament to the strong line-up we’ve built over the last few years and the concerted effort we’ve made to listen to audience feedback and respond accordingly. You can expect to see our presenters out and about around Melbourne a lot more next year too.”
