A dinner was held on the evening of May 6 at the Grand Vaudeville in Condell Park, hosted by the Lebanese Forces and attended by MP George Okais. The dinner was also attended by representatives of various political parties and the Maronite Church.
The evening program began an hour after guests had arrived. It started with a prayer by one of the Maronite representatives, followed by a short speech by one of the Lebanese Forces representatives. The speaker explained that loyalty to the motherland, regardless of what generation diaspora you belong to, is incredibly important in helping Lebanon, despite the extensive Lebanese diaspora across the globe.
MP Okais began his speech by discussing whether he would meet Lebanese diaspora or Australian citizens with Lebanese origins when he came to Australia. He then explained the various issues currently afflicting Lebanon, such as shortages of essential goods, rising poverty rates, and the inability of people to access their savings from banks. He also mentioned a 2021 UN report that estimated 78% of the population lived below the poverty line, with 36% in extreme poverty. The financial situation has worsened since 2021, with the currency weakening even further. MP Okais criticized the corruption in Lebanon, primarily due to the influence of Hezbollah and its allegiance with Iran. He also mentioned the Syrian refugee crisis, explaining that refugees need to return to Syria while Hezbollah needs to return to Lebanon. This essentially means to stop accepting funding and weapons from Iran. MP Okais concluded his speech by reminding the crowd of the will and strength of the Lebanese people by discussing the Cedar Revolution back in 2005. Peaceful protests by the people after the assassination of Rafic Hariri led to the withdrawal of the Syrian Army. This is a message that the people of Lebanon need that strength today.
MP Okais expressed his gratitude to the crowd for attending and for other parties and groups for attending before concluding the speech and receiving an award. A raffle was also held with a $50 fee to enter. After the program concluded, a singer took the stage, and a majority of the people began to dance beginning a dabke of around 60 people. After it had dispersed, people danced with MP Okais as a large Lebanese Forces flag was waved around the dance floor. The evening concluded just past 11 pm.
