After holding second place for most of a wet 2025 Australian Grand Prix, Aussie F1 McLaren driver Oscar Piastri endured heartbreak at his home Grand Prix after his car spun out of control on lap 44 costing him potentially a podium finish in Melbourne, while his teammate British driver Lando Norris secured his fifth career win despite his car also sliding off the track.
The situation worsened for the Aussie after his car struggled to get out of the gravel with Piastri having to reverse out of the gravel trap costing him time and his second spot in the race. By the time he regained momentum into the race it was too late with too few laps remaining for Piastri to reclaim his second spot. The Melbournian finished in ninth position achieving only two points.
Piastri was disappointed after losing his second spot position but acknowledged his mistake. “I’m just disappointed, obviously. I honestly don’t know what to say, really,” he told media. “Obviously, a mistake from myself but I think for it to have the consequences that it did were a little bit unfortunate.
“I’ve only got myself to blame. I tried to push too much in those conditions. But the other 56 and three-quarter laps were very strong. “I’m obviously very disappointed, but I think there are a lot of positives to take,” Piastri highlighted.
However, despite his setback Piastri remained positive, admitting the result will hurt for a while but he was still happy with his performance expect for that one lap. On the other hand Norris was thrilled to win the race in challenging wet conditions. “It was amazing,” Norris reflected after jumping out of the car. “A tough race, especially with Max behind me. I was pushing, especially the last two laps were a little bit stressful, but an amazing way to start the year.
“A tough one because we went off, made some big mistakes and went through the gravel and did a lot of damage. It was just tricky conditions, but these are the ones that are enjoyable and fun and unpredictable, but this time we got it right and we ended up on top, so I’m very happy,” Norris emphasized.
Formula One action now heads to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit on March 23 where Oscar Piastri will be aiming to bounce back and finish strong after a disappointing result in Melbourne.
