Member for Auburn, Lynda Voltz, is calling on the community to join a public rally to protect two of the region’s most important public green spaces — Carnarvon Golf Course and Coleman Park — from being turned into cemetery land under a proposal from the NSW Government.
“These aren’t just patches of grass,” said Ms Voltz. “They are two of the busiest and most heavily used sporting precincts in our local area, providing cradle-to-grave active recreation for the entire community.”
Each week, hundreds of local families — from under six soccer teams to centenarian golfers — rely on these spaces for exercise, organised sport, and social connection. But their value goes far beyond sport.
“They form a vital green corridor, act as a water catchment, and host a function centre where generations of residents have celebrated everything from Year 6 graduations to 21st birthdays and weddings,” Ms Voltz said.
“The loss of these sites would come at a significant cost to our community’s health, social fabric and local identity.”
While acknowledging the need for more burial space, Ms Voltz is urging the Government to undertake transparent consultation with the community and to consider all viable alternatives, not just the ones easiest to impose, before sacrificing essential public assets.
A community rally has been organised to show strong local opposition to the plan:
WHEN: Sunday, 24th August at 11:00 AM
WHERE: Coleman Park, Corner of Georges Avenue and Nottinghill Road, Lidcombe
“This is a critical moment,” said Ms Voltz. “We must send a clear message: hands off our community assets. I urge every local resident who values our parks, our open space, and our way of life to stand with us.”
