Crowds gather in Queens Gardens to celebrate diversity and inclusion

Thousands rallied for diversity and inclusion at Brisbane’s 35th annual Pride Fair Day.

Over four thousand people gathered at Queens Gardens last Saturday morning with rainbow flags and celebration despite the forecast of rain.

This year marks 35 years since Brisbane Pride was formed. It also coincides with the anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Queensland.

President of the LGBTQIA+ alliance Rebecca Johnson addressed the crowd and reflected on visibility, unity and ongoing advocacy.

“Celebrate today, be visible, be proud. Don’t take a backwards step. It is our job that the generations coming in behind us can carry this flag for all queers in the state,” she said.

“We have an opportunity to do this journey together. It is extremely important that in the next years to come we stand united.

“One of the great things we’ve seen in the investment in our LGBTQIA+ community is the regional pride activation grants. We’d like to see them continue to be invested in the state.”

Marchers making their way across Victoria Bridge to Musgrave Park

The Pride parade followed with the sea of rainbow clad people marching through Brisbane’s streets to Musgrave Park for the Fair Day.

Welcomed by music, food and community stalls, attendees vibrantly celebrated Brisbane’s diversity, inclusion and queer community.
