A Newcastle man has avoided jail time despite possessing 34,000 child abuse images and 13 bestiality videos. Jarrod Scifleet, 25, pleaded guilty to four offences related to these disturbing materials. He was sentenced to a three-year community corrections order, with the judge describing the images as “depraved.” According to ABC News, Judge Roy Ellis noted that Scifleet had been collecting such images for a decade and struggled to break free from this cycle.
The sentencing occurred in the Newcastle District Court, following a police raid on Scifleet’s home in October 2024, prompted by the Australian Federal Police. During the investigation, authorities discovered not only the offensive images but also unregistered firearms, including pistols, throwing stars, and a trench knife. Scifleet’s mental health issues were acknowledged by the judge, who stated that he rarely left his home and was easily led.
Judge Ellis emphasized the serious nature of Scifleet’s offences but acknowledged that ongoing counselling could help him avoid reoffending. The conditions of his community corrections order include a ban on owning devices with internet access, which must be supervised by a family member if used on someone else’s device. The judge warned Scifleet that any breaches of this order could result in imprisonment.
Scifleet will also be registered on the Child Protection Register for eight years, as part of the extensive treatment plan he is required to follow. Judge Ellis stated that Scifleet had narrowly avoided incarceration and must take significant steps to change his behaviour moving forward.
