Arabic version: رحلة الزوجين من التعارف عبر الإنترنت إلى زفاف مجتمعي
Jackie Turner and Aimee Bull-McMahon, who married in the Blue Mountains in 2022, reflect on their unexpected love story that began in 2019. Both had recently exited long-term relationships and were not actively seeking love when they met on OKCupid, a dating platform they describe as charmingly old-fashioned.
The couple, both in their late 30s and based in Sydney, bonded over their shared passions for community work, with Jackie serving as the director of the Trans Justice Project and Aimee as a climate justice campaigner. They plan to participate together in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras this year, representing the Parents for Trans Youth Equity. According to ABC News, their first meeting took place at a queer bar in Redfern, where they enjoyed a night of deep conversation that lasted until midnight.
Despite initial caution in their relationship due to past heartbreaks, Jackie and Aimee quickly recognized their strong connection. They moved in together in 2021 and married the following year, planning a wedding that embraced community involvement and personal touches. Their wedding decorations included repurposed Mardi Gras items, and their friends contributed to the celebration by creating a lively atmosphere with music and decorations.
However, their journey has not been without challenges. Shortly after their wedding, Aimee developed long COVID, which significantly affected their lives and ability to partake in adventures. Despite this, they have learned to adapt and support each other through difficult times, deepening their bond as they navigate the complexities of life together.
