Arabic version: طلاب إيرانيون يحتجون لليوم الثاني ضد قيادة الحكومة
Iranian students have held protests that led to clashes at several Iranian universities for a second day on Sunday, in the latest display of anger at the country’s clerical leaders. The demonstrations reflect growing discontent with the clerical leadership, particularly as tensions rise with the United States over military presence and nuclear negotiations.
According to SBS News, students at Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology were seen condemning Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, labeling him a “murderous leader”. They also expressed support for Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s former monarch, calling for a change in leadership.
Videos from the protests showed students chanting slogans against the government and engaging in scuffles with counter-protesters. Reports indicated that the protests escalated from what was intended to be a peaceful sit-in memorializing those killed during previous demonstrations.
These protests come as the Iranian government faces increasing pressure from U.S. military actions in the region, which include the deployment of aircraft carriers and warplanes. The U.S. has been involved in negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program, but the situation remains tense with threats exchanged between the two nations.
The unrest has its roots in economic grievances that sparked mass protests in December, which were met with violent crackdowns leading to significant casualties. While Iranian authorities acknowledge more than 3,000 deaths, human rights organizations report that the numbers could be higher, indicating deep divisions and unrest within the country.
