Michael Henry, a beloved member of Bendigo Swordcraft, experienced devastating losses due to the January 9 bushfires in Harcourt, Victoria. The fire destroyed his home and apple orchard, which was part of his family’s cider business, Henry of Harcourt. Despite these challenges, Henry has found solace and support in his Swordcraft community, which has rallied around him during this difficult time. According to ABC News, each week, Henry and other members of the community gather in Bendigo for live-action role play, a combat sport that offers an escape from reality.

The Ravenswood bushfire caused an estimated $5-6 million in damage to Henry’s orchard, as the trees were not insurable and will likely need to be bulldozed. Additionally, he lost about $400,000 worth of equipment stored in a local coolstore, which was also destroyed. Henry stated that the fire has set his business back at least 10 years, as they were once one of the largest growers of traditional cider apples in Australia.

Despite his losses, Henry remains actively involved in the community’s recovery efforts, helping manage a makeshift relief center. However, he continues to participate in Swordcraft, which he describes as a necessary outlet for his frustrations. “Without the fun of being able to vent my frustrations by swinging swords at people, I probably would be insane by now,” he remarked.

The Bendigo Swordcraft community is known for its inclusivity, welcoming individuals from all walks of life. Warband leader John Ronchi emphasized the friendships formed through the sport, noting that it attracts a diverse group of participants. Fundraising efforts initiated by fellow Swordcrafter Chloe Wallace have also provided significant support for Henry, raising over $15,000 to assist him during this challenging period. Henry expressed deep gratitude for the community’s support, stating it provided him with a safety net during his recovery process.
