Arabic version: غوريلاز تستكشف الحياة والموت في ألبومها الجديد الجبل
Gorillaz has released their latest album, The Mountain, which draws deep inspiration from Indian music and culture. This marks the band’s ninth studio album and is their first under their own Kong record label. The album’s concept revolves around the Hindu belief of Samsara, viewing death as a transition rather than an end.
According to ABC News, the album features a narrative where animated avatars 2D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russell embark on a journey up a mountain, immersing themselves in the rhythms of Indian music. The project is noted for its cohesive sound and earnest themes, contrasting with previous releases.
The Mountain is deeply personal for band members Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, as it was created in the wake of significant personal losses. Hewlett’s mother-in-law died in 2023, and shortly after, both Albarn and Hewlett lost their fathers within 10 days of each other, which influenced the album’s exploration of grief and mortality. The album features a mix of British artists and traditional Indian musicians, creating a rich tapestry of sound.
The album includes 15 tracks, with notable contributions from posthumous performances, including voices from the late Dennis Hopper and soul legend Bobby Womack. Albarn emphasizes the album’s theme of time travel, as it resurrects these voices to create new musical experiences.
The presence of Indian musicians is a standout feature, with contributions from renowned artists like bansuri flautist Ajay Prasanna and Bollywood legend Asha Bhosle. The Mountain not only showcases their musical talents but also delves into profound questions about the afterlife and the cyclical nature of existence. This ambitious project reflects Gorillaz’s ongoing evolution in the music landscape.
