The 2026 Winter Paralympics officially commenced with athletes from Russia and Belarus parading behind their national flags during the opening ceremony in Milan-Cortina. This event marks the first time since the Sochi 2014 Games that athletes from Russia and Belarus have been allowed to compete under their nations’ flags at a Paralympics, following bans due to a state-sponsored doping scandal and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to BBC News, the inclusion of six Russian and four Belarusian athletes has sparked significant controversy, leading to a boycott of the ceremony by teams from seven nations, including Ukraine. Despite the absence of the Ukrainian delegation, their flag received one of the loudest cheers when carried into the arena by a volunteer.
Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee, emphasized the importance of these Games in promoting inclusivity and respect among nations, stating that differences should be viewed as sources of strength. He expressed disappointment over the lack of improvement in global conditions since he last spoke out four years ago.
In a related development, Iran announced it would no longer compete in the Games due to safety concerns preventing its sole athlete from traveling to Italy. The opening ceremony took place at the historic Arena di Verona, with over 660 athletes from 56 countries participating in various sports until March 15.
The ceremony highlighted Verona’s cultural significance, culminating in the lighting of two Paralympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina. Parsons remarked on the potential of Paralympians to redefine possibilities and inspire change through their performances, showcasing the incredible diversity of human ability.
