Katherine has experienced its worst flooding in 28 years, with the Katherine River peaking at 19.2 metres. According to ABC News, the floodwaters reached their highest levels since 1998, inundating homes and businesses in the area.

As a result of the severe flooding, emergency evacuations are ongoing in several remote communities, including Daly River and Palumpa. Many residents have been moved to Darwin, with about 500 people currently sheltering in emergency evacuation centres. Some residents in Palumpa are still waiting for rescue as floodwaters continue to rise.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported that floodwaters at the local police station in Daly River reached 14.3 metres and are expected to rise further. The area has seen significant rainfall, prompting warnings that the Daly River could remain above major flood levels for at least the week and into next weekend.

In Katherine, floodwaters have overwhelmed a flood levee, and the local hospital has been evacuated. Authorities confirmed that at least 90 homes in Katherine lost power due to the flooding. The incident controller, Shaun Gill, emphasized the complexity of the emergency situation, stating that multiple communities are affected and that efforts to assist residents are ongoing.

In addition to Katherine and Daly River, other communities like Beswick and Jilkminggan are also facing flood risk, with some residents self-evacuating to higher ground. As the situation develops, local officials are working diligently to ensure the safety and welfare of those impacted by the flooding.
