Authorities have confirmed that two bodies found in Queensland floodwaters are those of missing backpackers. The tragic discovery marks the first flood-related deaths in the rain-battered region, deeply impacting the community of Gympie, where the bodies were located.
The victims, a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were believed to be Chinese nationals who disappeared while traveling from Brisbane to the North Burnett region for fruit picking. Their vehicle reportedly drove off a bridge into the floodwaters, prompting an extensive search that included police, SES volunteers, and helicopters. According to SBS News, the search area extended from Kilkivan to Mundubbera, where floodwaters severely affected communities.
Local mayor Glen Hartwig expressed condolences for the families affected by this tragedy, stating, “They are two young people who have sadly passed away. For their families who have to deal with this heartache, our thoughts and prayers go out to them.” A formal identification process for the bodies is still underway.
The region has experienced significant rainfall, with up to 400mm falling within a 24-hour period, leading to severe flooding. Hartwig noted that infrastructure damage is extensive, and recovery will take considerable time, particularly for farmers whose crops have been destroyed.
In response to the flooding, an emergency declaration was issued for the Chinchilla community, where an exclusion zone has been established as floodwaters threaten. Residents are being urged to evacuate low-lying areas, and preparations are underway to manage rising water levels in other parts of Queensland. The situation remains critical as communities brace for further impacts from the ongoing weather conditions.
