Netflix has announced a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the streaming platform’s most watched movie of all time. This new project will be the first under the exclusive multi-year deal with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. The announcement coincides with predictions that the original film will win at the Oscars, where it has two nominations for best animated feature and best original song.

According to BBC News, the original film follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey from the K-pop group Huntr/x as they grapple with fame while leading secret lives as demon hunters. The film’s song, Golden, won a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking a historic achievement as the first K-pop song to receive the award.

In a social media announcement, Kang expressed pride in the reception of the film, stating, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters.” She hinted at the expansive world they have created, stating, “This is only the beginning.”

Ejae, who voices Rumi’s singing parts and co-wrote Golden, mentioned her aspirations for the sequel, hoping to introduce new musical styles that reflect the diversity of Korean music. South Korean music producer Kim Eun-jae, known as EjaeZhun, also aims to maintain the high energy from the first film and blend music with visual elements that resonated with audiences.

KPop Demon Hunters has become a cultural phenomenon since its release last summer, breaking into mainstream Western markets and achieving over 480 million views within six months. The film has been recognized at various award shows, winning best animated motion picture and best original song at the Golden Globes, and it is currently competing for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars against films like Disney’s Zootopia 2 and Elio.
