Arabic version: الملك تشارلز يستضيف زيارة دولة تاريخية من رئيس نيجيريا
King Charles is hosting the first Nigerian state visit to the UK for 37 years, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, given a ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle. The ceremonial welcome took place at Windsor Castle, featuring a grand carriage procession and military parade. Senior royals, including Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales, were present to greet the visiting dignitaries.
According to BBC News, the two-day visit aims to strengthen business ties between Nigeria and the UK, focusing on financial services. The Nigerian government spokesperson, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the visit’s goal of transforming the historic relationship into a modern economic partnership.
Despite the festive atmosphere, there will be no traditional lunch with the King due to President Tinubu’s observance of Ramadan. Later in the visit, the couple will participate in an interfaith event and lay a wreath at the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The visit occurs against the backdrop of ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, with President Tinubu facing international pressure to address issues affecting vulnerable groups. This includes recent violence attributed to Boko Haram militants, which has raised concerns about the treatment of Christians in Nigeria. The state visit highlights the complexities of Nigeria’s socio-religious landscape, which is divided between Muslims and Christians.
The state banquet, set to be held in St George’s Hall, will feature speeches from both King Charles and President Tinubu, marking a significant moment in UK-Nigeria relations.
