The BBC is set to launch its latest family-friendly television drama, “Crookhaven,” which aims to attract fans of popular book adaptations. According to BBC News, the show is based on the book series by JJ Arcanjo and focuses on a unique school that teaches young criminals to use their skills for good.

Starring 23-year-old Lucas Leach as the lead character Gabriel, a pickpocket, the series features a diverse cast of young actors known for their roles in popular shows like “Adolescence” and “Heartstopper.” Leach described returning to a school setting for filming as a cathartic experience, reflecting on his own challenges with bullying during his school years.

Co-star 21-year-old Carmel Laniado, who plays Gabriel’s rival Penelope, emphasized the importance of the show’s diverse cast, which represents an international school environment. She noted that despite their different backgrounds, the characters find a sense of belonging and connection with one another.

The adaptation of “Crookhaven” comes at a time when successful TV adaptations often boost interest in their original source material. Writer Justin Young acknowledged the challenges of adapting a beloved book series for television, highlighting the need for engaging storytelling every few minutes to keep viewers interested.

“Crookhaven” is designed to appeal to all ages, with Young stating that the aim was to create a show that families can enjoy together. The series is set to premiere on BBC One and CBBC on Sunday, 22 March, with the full series available on BBC iPlayer the same day.
