Max Verstappen has expressed serious concerns about his future in Formula 1, stating that he is contemplating quitting the sport. The four-time champion voiced his dissatisfaction with the new racing regulations following the Japanese Grand Prix, emphasizing that the changes do not align with his racing instincts. According to BBC News, Verstappen described the current driving experience as ‘anti-driving’ and indicated that he is struggling to adapt to the new hybrid engines.

Verstappen’s comments have raised alarms within the Red Bull team, with team principal Laurent Mekies noting that he and Verstappen were “focusing on the competitive picture” and “having zero discussions about the other aspects”. Mekies remains optimistic that providing Verstappen with a competitive car will improve his outlook on the sport.

The dissatisfaction with the new regulations is not limited to Verstappen; many drivers have voiced their frustrations. The recent race highlighted safety issues, particularly after Haas driver Oliver Bearman experienced a severe crash due to a 50km/h speed differential on the track. Other drivers, including Carlos Sainz, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, have echoed concerns about the risks posed by the current energy management strategies in racing.

While F1 officials initially believed the new power units enhanced racing, it has become evident that they negatively impact qualifying sessions. Discussions are ongoing about potential adjustments to the rules, particularly regarding the energy recovery limits that could improve both safety and competitiveness during races.

As the sport grapples with these challenges, some drivers, including Fernando Alonso, have criticized the diminished skill required in high-speed corners. Alonso’s remarks reflect a growing consensus that the current regulations may undermine the traditional aspects of racing that define Formula 1, prompting calls for urgent revisions.
