Carlie Eileen Richards has been released into a transitional mental health facility after being found mentally incompetent for a fatal crash that occurred in November 2022. This multi-car collision resulted in the death of 26-year-old Erica Hoy and injuries to three others, including Hoy’s twin sister, Lisa.

According to ABC News, Richards was under the influence of methylamphetamine and was experiencing a schizo-affective episode at the time of the incident.

During the crash, Richards was driving at an average speed of 157 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. District Court Judge Carmen Matteo noted that Richards had been exhibiting signs of mental instability, including persecutory delusions, prior to the collision. Despite being found mentally incompetent, she pleaded guilty to four counts of leaving the scene of the accident.

In sentencing, Judge Matteo imposed a term of one year and 10 months for the offenses, which Richards has already served while in custody. She will now spend nine years under mental health supervision. Judge Matteo emphasized that Richards was aware of her involvement in the crash and understood the wrongfulness of fleeing the scene.

Richards is currently residing at a mental health accommodation service designed for individuals transitioning back into the community. She has been banned from driving for 15 years and must adhere to psychiatric assessments and treatment. Judge Matteo expressed confidence in Richards’ current mental stability and the support available to her in the community, stating that she is likely to comply with the conditions set forth by the court.
