According to BBC News,

The BBC has confirmed that it was aware of a police investigation into DJ Scott Mills in 2017. Mills, a prominent Radio 2 presenter, was recently terminated after “new information” regarding his conduct emerged, according to the corporation.

Previously, Mills was questioned over historical allegations of serious sexual offences, but no charges were brought as prosecutors deemed there was insufficient evidence to proceed in 2019. Mills has not responded to repeated requests for comment regarding his dismissal.

The BBC’s statement follows increasing scrutiny on the network to clarify the circumstances surrounding Mills’ sudden departure. A spokesperson noted that the decision to terminate Mills’ contracts was made after obtaining new information and speaking directly with him.

The BBC acknowledged that it had been informed of the ongoing police investigation in 2017, which was subsequently closed in 2019 with no arrest or charge being made. The statement emphasized the organization’s commitment to enhancing its culture and standards following an independent review.

In light of the allegations, which reportedly span from 1997 to 2000, the BBC apologized for not addressing a separate allegation of “inappropriate communications” involving Mills that was raised last year. The situation continues to develop as the BBC works to understand the details of what was known at the time of the initial investigation.
