Eghosa Ogbebor, a 14-year-old boy, was shot dead in Woolwich on Thursday. Emergency services responded to reports of the shooting on Lord Warwick Street around 15:40 BST. Despite paramedics’ efforts, Ogbebor was pronounced dead at the scene. The Metropolitan Police have informed his family of the tragic incident.
In connection with the murder, two boys aged 14 and 16, along with an 18-year-old man, have been arrested. Detectives leading the investigation are urging anyone with information or relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward. An increased police presence has been established in the area to reassure the community.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene, with patrons of a nearby pub, The Greyhound, rushing inside in fear after hearing gunshots. A pub worker described hearing a loud bang followed by panic among customers, some of whom reported seeing a teenager fleeing the scene.
The area surrounding the shooting has been cordoned off, with forensic officers conducting searches. Flowers have been laid at the site in memory of Ogbebor. Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card expressed condolences to the victim’s family and acknowledged the community’s concerns about the incident.
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan condemned the violence, stating, “There is absolutely no place for this heart-breaking violence.” He assured the public that the Metropolitan Police are working diligently on the investigation and that residents will notice an increased police presence in Woolwich.
