Iran’s sports minister has stated that the nation’s participation in the upcoming World Cup is uncertain unless FIFA agrees to relocate its matches from the United States to Mexico. Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali revealed that the Iranian Football Federation (IFF) has formally requested the change but has not yet received a response from FIFA.

According to Al Jazeera, Donyamali emphasized that if FIFA accepts their request, Iran’s participation would be assured. The team is currently scheduled to play all of its group matches on the US West Coast, including games against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.

The backdrop to this request includes escalating tensions between Iran, the US, and Israel, which have heightened since attacks began on February 28. Iranian officials, including football chief Mehdi Taj, have expressed concerns over the safety of their players, especially following comments from US President Donald Trump suggesting that Iran’s security could not be guaranteed during their stay in the US.

FIFA has reportedly rejected Iran’s relocation request, insisting that all matches will proceed as planned in the locations previously announced. FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that the matches will take place according to the original schedule. Despite these developments, Donyamali affirmed that Iranian players are continuing their preparations and will be ready for the World Cup, urging FIFA to ensure adequate security measures are in place.

The World Cup is set to begin on June 11 in Mexico, with Iran’s opening match scheduled for June 16 in Los Angeles. The situation remains fluid as Iran awaits a final decision regarding their participation.
