János Bődey, a Hungarian photojournalist, has captured the vibrant spirit of elderly residents during carnival celebrations at a retirement home in Páty, near Budapest. His photograph features two women, 87-year-old Magdolna Bölcskey and 86-year-old Irén Németh, dressed as bride and groom, showcasing their joyful engagement with life despite the challenges faced by pensioners in Hungary. According to The Guardian, Bődey’s work aims to highlight the resilience and happiness of elderly individuals, encouraging others to view retirement as an opportunity for fulfillment rather than a decline.
In his series titled “Carnival at the Retirement Home,” Bődey explores the changing perceptions of moving into such facilities. Unlike in previous decades when families often made the decision for their elderly relatives, many seniors today proactively seek out retirement homes that best meet their needs. The series emphasizes that a positive attitude and active lifestyle can lead to a happy retirement, as demonstrated by the two women who shared their life secrets with Bődey.
Both Magdolna and Irén attribute their longevity and happiness to healthy habits and strong marriages. Magdolna credits her good genes and active lifestyle, while Irén advises against financial debt, echoing wisdom passed down from her grandmother. Their insights reflect a broader message about preparing for retirement by nurturing emotional and financial resources.
Bődey, who typically covers more serious topics such as social and political conflicts, found this project to be refreshing and playful. His photography not only captures joyful moments but also serves as a reminder of the importance of planning for a fulfilling retirement. His work has garnered recognition, with the series shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards, showcasing the vibrancy of life in unexpected places.
The exhibition of Bődey’s work will take place at Somerset House in London from April 17 to May 4, 2026, where viewers can appreciate the beauty and resilience of elderly individuals celebrating life through carnival festivities.
