Indian music legend Asha Bhosle has died aged 92, as confirmed by her family. The celebrated singer, known for her significant contributions to Bollywood music, was hospitalized in Mumbai due to complaints of extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. Her son, Anand Bhosle, announced her passing, stating that her last rites will take place at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
Bhosle’s remarkable career spanned nearly eight decades, during which she recorded more than 12,000 songs. She was a two-time Grammy nominee and received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2000. Her voice resonated throughout India, especially during the 1970s and 80s, as she embraced a variety of musical styles, including cabaret and western-influenced melodies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over Bhosle’s death, highlighting her extraordinary musical journey that enriched India’s cultural heritage. He remarked that her songs will continue to inspire future generations.
Born on 8 September 1933, into a musical family, Bhosle was the sister of Lata Mangeshkar, another iconic singer. Despite being often compared to her sister, Bhosle forged her own path in the music industry, exploring genres ranging from pop to folk. Her life was marked by challenges, including a difficult marriage at the young age of 16.
In addition to her musical achievements, Bhosle also pursued her love for food by launching the Asha’s restaurant chain in Dubai and Britain. Even in her later years, she collaborated with global artists, including a recent track on the British virtual band Gorillaz’s album, The Mountain.
According to The Guardian, Bhosle’s legacy as one of Bollywood’s most versatile and celebrated voices will endure in the hearts of many.
