Arabic version: ترامب يعلن عن حصار بحري لمضيق هرمز
U.S. President Donald Trump has declared an imminent naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following unsuccessful negotiations with Iran. According to BBC News, Trump stated that the blockade would prevent any vessels from entering or exiting the strait, a crucial shipping route for global oil and gas transport.
The blockade announcement comes after direct talks with Iran in Pakistan failed, with Trump attributing the breakdown to Iran’s unwillingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions. In response, Iranian officials criticized the U.S. for making excessive demands during negotiations.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. Navy would begin the blockade immediately and would seek to interdict vessels that have paid tolls to Iran. He also mentioned plans to destroy mines allegedly laid by Iran in the strait. The President’s remarks included a stern warning against any Iranian attacks on U.S. forces or civilian vessels.
While Trump indicated that other countries would assist in the blockade, he did not specify which nations would be involved. The UK government has stated it will not participate but remains committed to ensuring freedom of navigation in the strait. A spokesperson noted that they are working with France and other allies to form a coalition for this purpose.
Shipping experts have expressed skepticism about the blockade’s potential impact, suggesting it may only affect a small number of vessels. As of now, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, with very few ships crossing since a recent ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
