Andy Mycock, an academic (yes, he’s Dr Mycock) from Buxton, Derbyshire, is on a personal journey to embrace his unique surname, which has often been a source of embarrassment throughout his life. According to BBC News, Mycock is a common name in his hometown, but it took moving to Salford for him to realize the humor and stigma attached to it.

For the first 18 years of his life, Mycock was unaware of the potential for laughter his surname could evoke. However, upon arriving at university, he quickly became the subject of jokes, which left him feeling self-conscious. Everyday interactions, whether at banks or shops, often resulted in suppressed laughter or unsolicited jokes, making it challenging for him to feel at ease.

Mycock’s experiences extend beyond face-to-face interactions; he faces difficulties in the digital realm as well. Online forms frequently reject his name, and emails often land in spam folders due to its unconventional nature. His mother Patricia had a dreadful time when she took on the surname, ultimately opting to change it after her divorce.

Despite the challenges, Mycock has started to recognize the positive aspects of his surname. He has turned his experiences into a comedy show, finding humor in his situation. He performed at the Buxton Festival Fringe and plans to return with a new show this summer, showcasing how he has learned to appreciate the uniqueness of his name, albeit with an emotional cost attached.

As he prepares to marry his partner, Jennie, after 25 years together, Mycock reflects on the importance of humor and the impact of names on identity. He encourages others to be mindful of how they joke about names, emphasizing the emotional weight they can carry.
