Avraham Zarbiv, a rabbi accused of war crimes, has been selected to light a torch at Israel’s upcoming Independence Day ceremony, a decision that has stirred significant controversy. According to Al Jazeera, Zarbiv’s actions in Gaza have been celebrated by some Israelis but condemned internationally.

Zarbiv, who has gained notoriety for his violent actions against Palestinians, first came to prominence in early 2024 when he was filmed throwing grenades at Palestinians in Khan Younis during a firefight. His name has since become synonymous with destruction, with some Israelis using it as a verb meaning ‘to demolish’. Despite his military background, the Israeli army has distanced itself from him, stating that he was not selected in coordination with military leadership.

In addition to his controversial public persona, Zarbiv has been accused of illegal settlement construction, having built his home illegally on private Palestinian land in the Beit El settlement. His nomination for the torch-lighting ceremony was defended by Transport Minister Miri Regev, who praised Zarbiv’s dual commitment to religious and military duties.

The selection of Zarbiv has drawn criticism from various human rights organizations, including the Hind Rajab Foundation and B’tselem. These groups argue that honoring Zarbiv is indicative of a troubling state narrative that endorses the dehumanization of Palestinians and the ongoing violence in the region. They assert that his actions constitute grave breaches of international law, and his elevation to such a prominent ceremonial role sends a dangerous message about Israel’s stance on war crimes and ethnic cleansing.
