A school traffic warden in his 80s has been seriously injured after being struck by a Woolworths delivery truck at a busy intersection in Australind, Western Australia, on May 1, 2026. According to ABC News, the incident occurred just after 7:30 a.m. at the corner of Paris Road and Barnes Avenue, next to a childcare centre.

Emergency services responded promptly, and the warden was taken to Bunbury Hospital for treatment. Police reported that the warden stepped out in front of the truck before being struck. The truck driver is assisting police with their inquiries, and authorities have indicated that there is no evidence to suggest that speed or alcohol played a role in the accident.

Acting Superintendent Andy Elliott stated that multiple witnesses, possibly including children, were present at the scene during the incident. The traffic warden remains in hospital as police continue their inquiries. Elliott acknowledged the potential impact of age on the warden’s recovery, expressing hope for a positive outcome.

Residents have expressed ongoing concerns regarding safety at the intersection, which they believe has been an accident hotspot for years. Local resident Belinda Williams, who frequently uses the crossing, described the incident as “absolutely devastating” and emphasized the need for improved traffic management solutions, such as roundabouts or traffic lights.

The Shire of Harvey has recognized community concerns and stated that safety around crossings is a top priority. The shire has installed traffic counters at multiple locations along Paris Road and says the counters will inform the development of “appropriate traffic management measures.”
