Spotify has ruined mood playlists – so our critics have made some better ones instead. According to The Guardian, these playlists aim to provide a more authentic emotional experience compared to the algorithm-driven offerings on the platform.

The rise of mood-based playlists has transformed the way listeners engage with music, with Spotify hosting numerous user-generated options. However, some critics argue that these playlists often lack depth and emotional nuance. Liz Pelly’s 2025 book, “Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist,” highlights concerns that Spotify’s focus on mood playlists caters to passive listeners rather than passionate music fans.

In response to these concerns, The Guardian’s music writers have compiled six playlists designed to evoke specific emotions. These selections range from energetic tracks like Girls Aloud’s “Something Kinda Ooooh” and Orbital’s “Chime” to more romantic choices like Fleetwood Mac’s “Only Over You” and Arooj Aftab’s “Diya Hai.”

The playlists reflect a diverse range of moods, showcasing the writers’ personal connections to the music. By offering alternatives to Spotify’s algorithmically generated playlists, these critics hope to restore the emotional resonance that music can provide, emphasizing the importance of human curation in creating meaningful listening experiences.
