A principal from Keysborough Secondary College in Melbourne remains unable to return to work after being stabbed by a former teacher, Kim Ramchen, who has pleaded guilty to the attack. The incident occurred last December when Ramchen confronted Aaron Sykes in his office, leading to a violent struggle that left Sykes with multiple injuries, including cuts to his jaw, cheek, lip, and arm. According to ABC News, Sykes is still traumatized and has not resumed his duties since the attack.

During a recent online court hearing, Ramchen admitted to intentionally causing injury and assault, while prosecutors have dropped two additional charges. The court learned that Ramchen was dealing with personal issues, including marital problems and the stress of his teaching contract not being renewed, compounded by painkiller addiction. His defense attorney described the incident as a result of Ramchen’s mental health struggles.

The court proceedings revealed that other teachers intervened during the attack, successfully disarming Ramchen after he attempted to stab Sykes multiple times. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with Sykes escaping covered in blood and in shock. A school nurse who treated Sykes later recounted the distressing nature of his injuries and the fear evident on his face during the attack.

Ramchen’s attorney highlighted his client’s previously non-violent history and recent mental health diagnoses, including autism and depression. The lawyer urged the court to consider rehabilitation as part of the sentencing, emphasizing that Ramchen’s life has been irrevocably altered due to the incident. Ramchen is scheduled to be sentenced on May 11, with calls for a focus on treatment and rehabilitation going forward.
