Nigel Farage has declared a “truly historic shift in British politics” following significant electoral gains by Reform UK. The party has won hundreds of seats and gained control of several councils across England, indicating a potential change in voter allegiance.
According to BBC News, Reform UK achieved notable successes, including its first control of a London borough in Havering, and victories over Conservative candidates in Essex and Suffolk. The party also made inroads at the expense of Labour in the Midlands and northern England.
Farage emphasized that the support for Reform is not a fleeting trend, suggesting that the party can win in areas traditionally dominated by both Conservative and Labour parties. Recent results show that Reform has gained control of councils previously held by Labour, such as Barnsley, Wakefield, Sunderland, and Gateshead.
In Wigan, Reform won 24 out of 25 contested seats, which contributed to Labour losing its majority on the council. Control of Newcastle-under-Lyme passed to Reform from the Tories. Farage pointed out that Reform is proving competitive across a wide geographic range, from the southwest of England to the northeast of Scotland.
Polling expert Sir John Curtice noted that Reform has performed best in regions that strongly supported Brexit in 2016. He projected a national vote share suggesting Reform is at 26%, ahead of the Greens at 18%, with both Labour and the Conservatives at 17%. This marks a slight decline from the 30% share indicated after last year’s local elections.
