Jessica Pegula is helping organise player action over the French Open pay dispute. The 2024 US Open runner-up is leveraging her family’s experience in sports management, as her parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, to advocate for a larger share of tournament revenues devoted to players.
According to ABC News, Pegula has taken on a leadership role among top tennis players, reaching out to them about the prize money issue. Players including Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner have expressed support for a boycott, highlighting the need for a larger slice of the tournament revenue.
The upcoming French Open is allegedly devoting under 14.9% of its revenue to players, a decrease compared to the previous year. While the tournament organizers announced a 10% increase in overall prize money, Pegula argues that the players’ share is still disproportionately low compared to other sports like the NFL and NHL, where athletes take home about 50% of the revenues.
Pegula noted that the fragmented nature of tennis governance complicates efforts for player unity. With seven organizing bodies, including the ATP, WTA, and the four grand slams, she emphasized the importance of top-ranked players collaborating to address these issues. The French Open is set to begin on May 24, and Pegula’s efforts to unify players continue as they seek a more equitable distribution of prize money.
