Philip Davis will hold onto his seat as prime minister of the Bahamas after the Progressive Liberal Party scored a victory in early elections. The results were announced late on Tuesday, and the PLP is slated to win more than 30 of the 41 seats in the Bahamian Parliament. According to Al Jazeera, this win marks the first time since 1997 that a political party in the Bahamas has won a general election twice in a row.
Davis celebrated the outcome with supporters in Nassau, emphasizing his commitment to all Bahamians, including those who did not vote for him. This election positions him to become the first prime minister to retain his post for a consecutive term in nearly three decades, following Hubert Ingraham of the Free National Movement (FNM).
The opposition leader, Michael Pintard, conceded his party’s defeat but retained his seat in Parliament, representing the constituency of Marco City. He acknowledged the democratic process, stating, “The Bahamian people made their choice.”
This snap election was called early to avoid potential disruptions from the Atlantic hurricane season, similar to the early election in 2021. The PLP previously held 32 of the 39 seats in the House of Assembly before the election, which saw the addition of two new constituencies, increasing the total number of seats to 41. Key issues during the campaign included the cost of living, housing access, crime, immigration, and healthcare access.
