Arabic version: الصهيونية المسيحية تواجه تراجعًا مع تراجع الدعم بين الشباب
Christian Zionism, a movement advocating for the support of Israel among evangelical Christians, appears to be experiencing a decline in support, particularly among younger generations. According to Al Jazeera, recent studies indicate a significant drop in pro-Israel sentiments among young evangelicals, with only 33.6 percent of respondents under 30 expressing support for Israel.
This shift in attitudes is attributed to a diminishing belief in premillennialism, a key theological interpretation that traditionally bolstered support for Israel among evangelical Christians. A 2021 survey revealed that just 21 percent of young evangelicals adhered to this belief, a stark contrast to 65 percent reported in 2011. The decline in premillennialism suggests a potential weakening of the ideological foundations that have historically underpinned Christian Zionism.
Despite these changing views, Christian Zionists continue to exert considerable influence within the U.S. political landscape. Organizations such as Christians United for Israel (CUFI) maintain substantial lobbying efforts and financial resources, having spent more than $670,000 in Washington to advocate for U.S. sanctions on Iran and secure funding for Israel. This financial clout allows them to remain a significant force, even as public support for Israel declines.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza and perceptions of Israel’s influence in U.S. politics have further complicated the landscape for Christian Zionism. Polls indicate a growing sentiment among young conservatives that Israel wields too much power, which may ultimately affect voting behaviors in future elections.
Experts suggest that, while the popularity of Christian Zionism may be waning, its organizational structure and financial backing ensure its ongoing power. Reverend Fares Abraham emphasized that despite a decrease in universal appeal, the movement remains highly organized and well-funded, allowing it to sustain its influence in American politics.
