Arabic version: كتاب مارك لينش ينتقد السياسات الأمريكية في الشرق الأوسط
Marc Lynch’s new book, “America’s Middle East,” argues that U.S. foreign policy has not failed but was intentionally designed to maintain instability in the region. According to Middle East Eye, Lynch contends that the U.S. has constructed a regional order that prioritizes military dominance, the protection of Israel, and the support of autocratic regimes while systematically undermining genuine democracy and development.
The book presents a sweeping critique of American intervention since 1991, detailing how U.S. policies have led to significant turmoil, including the ruin of Iraq, a frozen and fraudulent peace process in Palestine, and the humanitarian crises in Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza. Lynch emphasizes that the so-called peace process has instead facilitated deeper control by Israel while allowing the U.S. to maintain the illusion of mediation.
Lynch, a professor at George Washington University, draws on his extensive experience in both scholarship and policy-making to provide a nuanced view of American foreign policy. He argues that this policy framework has consistently failed to address Palestinian suffering, treating it as a mere background issue rather than a moral imperative.
The author critiques the continuity of U.S. leadership, noting that each administration, from George H.W. Bush to Joe Biden, has perpetuated the same destructive patterns. Lynch highlights how American policies often produce the very Islamist movements they later seek to combat, demonstrating a cycle of intervention that exacerbates regional instability.
In his analysis, Lynch presents a chilling conclusion: American policies have succeeded in their own terms, reinforcing autocratic rule and maintaining U.S. dominance, all while neglecting the human cost of these strategies. His book serves as a critical examination of the intersection of U.S. foreign policy and the complex realities of the Middle East.
