City of Parramatta has honoured more than 520 volunteers for their outstanding contributions with a special celebration at Parramatta Town Hall during National Volunteers Week.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said volunteering plays a vital role in bringing the community together.
“Volunteering is one of the most powerful ways people can connect with their community and make a real difference,” Cr Zaiter said.
“Whether they’re helping at events, supporting community services or lending a hand behind the scenes, our volunteers play a vital role in creating a more welcoming, inclusive and connected Parramatta.
“Council’s volunteers are the heart and soul of our community – from offering practical help to navigate the latest technology to reducing social isolation, each volunteer makes a positive impact on people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds.”
This year’s national theme ‘Your Year to Volunteer’ has been set by Volunteering Australia for National Volunteer Week and reflects the work our volunteers do across every age group, service and suburb in the local area.
Volunteer Bipin Johri begun volunteering with Council more than 20 years ago, helping seniors learn how to use computers at the Dundas Community Centre for a few months between jobs.
In 2015, Mr Johri retired and returned to volunteering at the Dundas Library following his positive experience in 2003.
“What I love most is helping people feel more confident in using technology in their everyday life,” Mr Johri said.
“Many were initially nervous about using computers, but watching their confidence and skills grow was rewarding.
“By volunteering, I get the satisfaction that I am making a positive contribution to our community.”
City of Parramatta’s Food Services Meal on Wheels™ volunteer Bev Grace said listening to people’s stories and concerns is a privilege and something she holds close to her heart.
“Volunteering allows you to become humble as a person. It’s more than a warm meal, it’s showing people that they matter,” Mrs Grace said.
“I consider all the people I have volunteered with as friends. They became a part of my life, even if only for a short time.
“On a monthly basis, I catch up with some volunteers who have left the service.”
This year’s annual event recognised Council’s volunteers across a range of areas including Community Care, Library Services and Bushcare.
City of Parramatta is calling on more residents to consider volunteering, to help people feel connected, learn new skills and give back to their community.
