Marta Kostyuk’s first-round victory at the French Open was overshadowed by distressing news from home. The Ukrainian player faced Oksana Selekhmeteva, winning the match 6-2, 6-3, but revealed that earlier that morning, a missile strike nearly hit her family home in Ukraine.
Kostyuk fought back tears during her post-match comments, describing the day as one of the most challenging of her career. “This morning, 100 metres away from my parents’ house, the missile destroyed the building,” she said, expressing her emotional turmoil upon learning the news.
According to ABC News, Kostyuk received the alarming message at 8 AM. Despite her fears for her family’s safety, she found the strength to compete, stating, “I didn’t know how I would handle it, I’ve been crying part of the morning.”
Relief washed over her when she confirmed that her mother, sister, and great aunt were unharmed during the attack. She emphasized the importance of continuing to play, inspired by the resilience of her fellow Ukrainians. Kostyuk is set to face America’s Katie Volynets in the second round, while her compatriot Elina Svitolina also competes in the tournament.
