Frank Lampard has been named the League Managers Association manager of the year after guiding Coventry back to the Premier League. Lampard’s Sky Blues finished 11 points clear at the top of the Championship to clinch the title and return to the top flight for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The former England midfielder was presented with the Sir Alex Ferguson award by England manager Thomas Tuchel.
According to BBC News, the award, voted on by managers across leagues, considers success and available resources. Tuchel read a letter from Ferguson, who praised Lampard’s Coventry for playing “great football with confidence and belief.”
Lampard’s achievement comes as his Coventry side was the Championship’s highest scorer this season, netting 97 goals in 46 games, and also boasted the best defense. Other shortlisted managers included Keith Andrews of Brentford, Mikel Arteta from Arsenal, and Pep Guardiola of Manchester City.
In addition to Lampard’s recognition, Manchester City’s Andree Jeglertz won the Women’s Super League award, while Arteta was honored for leading Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years. The awards ceremony also saw Steve Bruce and Martin O’Neill inducted into the Hall of Fame for reaching 1,000 games as managers.
