Independent MLC Ruth Forrest has called for an apology after a personal health-related email she sent to the Tasmanian government was leaked to the media. According to ABC News, the leak raised concerns about the confidentiality of communications within the government.
Forrest made a request to the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPAC) asking that ministers and departmental staff refrain from wearing strong fragrances during upcoming hearings due to her adverse reactions. This email, described by Forrest as a “routine, courteous, administrative communication,” was reportedly sent at 10:32 AM.
However, she was surprised when a media outlet, Pulse Tasmania, contacted her a few hours later for comment on the email. Forrest expressed confusion over how her private health matter became public, questioning the appropriateness of sharing such communications with the media.
During a session in the Legislative Council, she emphasized that members of parliament deserve to have their health-related communications handled with dignity and discretion. Forrest criticized the act of leaking the email as disrespectful and aimed at trivializing her legitimate health concerns.
She demanded that the government identify the individual responsible for the leak and provide a formal public apology to her and her committee. Forrest clarified that her criticism was directed at the leak, not the media outlet itself, which she acknowledged was merely doing its job.
