Arabic version: أم تُحكم بالسجن 19 عامًا بتهمة قتل رضيعتها
A mother has been sentenced to a minimum of 19 years in prison after being convicted of murdering her 19-day-old daughter, Thea Wilson. Nicole Blain, 30, was found guilty of the crime last month, with the court determining that Thea died from injuries consistent with blunt force trauma or being shaken. According to BBC News, Judge Lord Scott described Blain’s actions as “catastrophic deadly violence” and dismissed her defense as a “patently absurd” attempt to evade responsibility.
During the trial, evidence revealed that Thea had suffered severe injuries, including three skull fractures, brain damage, and bleeding behind the eyes. Blain claimed that she found her daughter lying on the floor of their Greenock flat on 14 July 2023, suggesting that another child had caused the injuries. However, the jury found her guilty, with the judge stating, “What happened was no accident” and asserting that the violence was inflicted by Blain herself, the primary caregiver.
The court heard that on the day of Thea’s death, a social worker had visited Blain in the morning and noted that the baby was in her crib. Later that day, Blain made a phone call to Thea’s paternal grandmother, during which her husband reported hearing a “piercing” scream in the background. When Blain met with family members at the hospital, she continued to blame another child for the injuries.
Despite her claims, the evidence led to the conclusion that the infant’s injuries could not have resulted from a fall or being dropped. Judge Scott emphasized that Blain’s actions were intentional or recklessly wicked, highlighting the tragic outcome of her failure to protect her daughter. Following the sentencing, members of the public in the courtroom reacted with shouts of “monster” as Blain was taken away to serve her sentence.
