Hundreds of people attended a live music festival that was organised entirely by high school students from Northlakes High School on the NSW Central Coast. The event showcased local talent and served as a final assessment for their VET Entertainment Industry Studies course.

According to ABC News, the students coordinated every aspect of the festival, from booking local acts to managing marketing and lighting. The festival took place in the school gymnasium, where more than 300 festival-goers enjoyed performances from six local bands, primarily in the metal and rock genres.

Student organiser Drew Perrot-Schryver expressed excitement about the festival, stating, “We couldn’t wait to have our own and show everyone what a couple of teenagers are capable of.” The students also engaged in fundraising efforts, securing sponsorships from local businesses and hosting a community barbecue to finance the event.

Teacher Nathan Murray praised the students’ initiative, noting that he and the school were “completely hands-off” in organising the event. The festival not only provided practical experience for the students but also allowed them to earn a Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services. Murray highlighted the importance of equipping students with tangible skills for their future careers.

Following the success of Northwave, Murray anticipates that future classes will aim for even larger events, possibly a three-day music festival, to inspire the next generation in the entertainment industry.
