According to BBC News,

A police officer has been seriously injured after he was knocked down by a stolen police car in Downpatrick, County Down. The officer, who fired his gun during the incident, had been chasing a suspect after another vehicle failed to stop for police on Fountain Street. When officers returned to their car in the Colmcille Road area, another man was in the driver’s seat and he drove directly towards the officer, who fired one round before being struck by the police vehicle.

Urgent medical treatment was provided at the scene by police colleagues, who were also supported by members of the local community. The officer was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment to his injuries which are believed to be serious, but thankfully not life-threatening at this time. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that the stolen police car, the officer’s weapon and ammunition have all been taken away for forensic examination.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime branch have launched an investigation into the incident, which has raised significant concern among local officials. Northern Ireland’s Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, expressed his dismay at the attack on an officer serving the community, emphasizing the risks police face daily.

Community leaders, including South Down assembly member Cathy Mason and policing board member Trevor Clark, have condemned the incident and called for accountability. They expressed their support for the injured officer and highlighted the need for a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the event. The Police Ombudsman’s Office is also involved, gathering video evidence and information related to the incident.
