Authorities have confirmed the recovery of a body during the search for an 11-year-old boy, Mackenzie Swift, who went missing after entering the River Don in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Mackenzie was last seen near Ferry Boat Lane at about 20:00 BST on Saturday. Extensive searches, including the involvement of an underwater team and Mountain Rescue volunteers, concluded shortly before 23:00 on Monday.

According to BBC News, while formal identification of the body has yet to take place, Mackenzie’s family has been informed and has been offered specialist support. His death marks a tragic addition to the recent fatalities in the UK, where at least 16 individuals have died in open water incidents during the hot weather.

Ch Supt Pete Thorp, district commander for Doncaster, expressed his condolences to Mackenzie’s family and thanked the local community for their support during the search operation. He acknowledged the devastating impact of losing a child and commended the efforts of the volunteers involved in the search.

Local MP Ed Miliband also extended his condolences, emphasizing the community’s solidarity with Mackenzie’s family during this difficult time. He expressed gratitude to the emergency services and search teams for their tireless work in the recovery efforts.

Mackenzie’s passing follows a series of similar water-related incidents in recent weeks, including the deaths of a 13-year-old girl in North Yorkshire and a 15-year-old girl from Cheshire. These tragedies highlight the dangers associated with open water, particularly during the current hot weather conditions.
