Known as banquets géants, these events have attracted thousands, offering attendees a feast of local cuisine and an atmosphere of camaraderie. However, critics, especially from the leftist party La France Insoumise (LFI), argue that these gatherings harbor a darker undercurrent, citing concerns over alleged racist behavior and the exclusion of certain dietary groups.
According to BBC News, the banquets are organized by a company called Le Canon Français, which has gained popularity for its four-course meals and unlimited wine. Yet, LFI claims that the events are designed to alienate Muslims and vegetarians, particularly due to the frequent inclusion of pork in the menu. The party has also pointed to the financial backing from ultra-conservative entrepreneur Pierre-Edouard Stérin as indicative of a hidden political agenda.
At a recent banquet in Colmar, participants were seen enjoying traditional Alsatian dishes and engaging in spirited singing, dismissing the political accusations as exaggerated. Many attendees expressed that the focus should be on the social experience rather than the controversies surrounding the events. “We come for four things: atmosphere, friends, alcohol, and food,” said one young man, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in attendance.
The founders of Le Canon Français, Pierre-Alexandre de Boisse and Géraud de la Tour, contend that they are merely reviving a longstanding French tradition of communal dining. De Boisse emphasized the importance of fostering connections among diverse groups, despite acknowledging that many attendees may lean toward conservative viewpoints. He defended the integrity of the banquets, insisting they promote inclusivity and enjoyment.
LFI’s Fourreau has criticized the banquets as a nostalgic throwback that fails to represent modern France’s diversity. The party is actively seeking to halt these events, having made initial progress in towns like Quimper. Meanwhile, investigations are underway regarding allegations of racial provocation linked to past banquets.
As the political landscape in France evolves, the future of these banquets remains uncertain, caught in the crossfire of cultural celebration and political scrutiny.
