Daniel Turpin was killed in a shark attack off Albany, WA, on Saturday morning. According to ABC News, Turpin was spearfishing with family near Michaelmas Island when the incident occurred around 11:20 AM local time. Despite efforts to revive him after he was rushed back to shore, he could not be saved.

His family expressed their devastation in a statement, highlighting his love for the ocean and the joy he brought to their lives. They extended their gratitude to emergency responders and the community for their support during this tragic time.

WA Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis offered condolences to Turpin’s family, noting that there is currently no evidence of increased shark activity along the coast, despite two fatal attacks on spear fishers in recent weeks. She emphasized that Western Australia has a robust shark hazard mitigation strategy and stated that there had been 10 shark interactions with humans so far this year, compared with 19 last year.

Local MP Scott Leary described the incident as heartbreaking for the close-knit community of Albany and suggested that more caution is needed in the water. Commercial shark fisherman Brian Sell voiced concerns about rising shark populations and the potential for further attacks if they are not managed effectively. Jarvis, however, ruled out culling sharks, stating that such measures have not been proven to enhance safety.

Albany Mayor Greg Stocks expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the impact of the incident on the community and extending heartfelt condolences to those affected. He acknowledged the difficulty of coping with such a tragedy and encouraged the community to support one another during this challenging time.
