A former care worker at Skircoat Lodge has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for her role in the abuse of children, while her employer, aged 93, was granted an absolute discharge due to health issues. Linda Brunning, 67, was convicted of indecently assaulting a boy and assisting in the sexual abuse of another during the 1980s and 90s.
According to BBC News, Malcolm Phillips, the former manager, was labeled a “master manipulator” who created a culture of fear at the facility, where he abused multiple children from 1976 to 1994. Although he faced serious charges, Phillips was deemed unfit to stand trial and only underwent a trial of facts, which concluded with a jury affirming he committed the offenses.
Brunning’s sentencing followed a trial that highlighted the severe impact of the abuse on the victims, who described a history of neglect, threats, and manipulation. Judge Kirstie Watson remarked on the “vile abuse” that occurred under Phillips’ influence, noting the significant power imbalance that allowed such exploitation to persist for years.
Victims of the abuse, including Kelly Lees and Karen Bentham, expressed their frustration over Phillips not facing prison time. They emphasized the importance of speaking out and seeking justice, urging other survivors to come forward. Detective Chief Inspector Claire Smith of West Yorkshire Police acknowledged the bravery of the survivors and encouraged anyone affected by abuse to report it, emphasizing that they will be listened to and believed.
