Sydney audiences will have the chance to experience RAY – The Movie, a powerful film based on a true story, at its Sydney premiere on Saturday, 27 June 2026, at Palace Cinemas, Moore Park.

Set against the backdrop of Myanmar in February 2021, RAY follows the story of Ray, a former gymnast-turned-pageant winner who leaves behind the comfort of fame and privilege to take part in the Spring Revolution against Myanmar’s military dictatorship. The film is inspired by real events and reflects the courage, sacrifice and resilience of people who were forced to make extraordinary choices during one of the most difficult chapters in Myanmar’s recent history.

The project carries an even deeper significance because it was created by Burmese revolutionary artists in exile. Many of the artists involved were displaced or forced to continue their creative work away from home because of their resistance to military rule and oppression in Myanmar. Despite limited resources and extremely difficult circumstances, they remained committed to telling stories that preserve voices often silenced by conflict, fear and displacement.

Directed by The Khit Nay, the film is rooted in contemporary Burmese realities and character-driven storytelling. The Khit Nay began his career as a scriptwriter before moving into directing, and following the 2021 coup became part of a generation of Burmese artists creating from exile while continuing to highlight themes of resistance, displacement and resilience.

The film stars Htar Htet Htet as Ray. Htar Htet Htet is a Burmese actress, former national gymnast and beauty queen who represented Myanmar at Miss Grand International 2013. Following the 2021 military coup, she became internationally recognised for openly joining the resistance movement, making her role in RAY deeply connected to her own real-life journey.

The cast also includes Daung, one of Myanmar’s prominent contemporary actors, and Min Maw Kunn, an award-winning Burmese actor and singer who has appeared in more than 150 films. Both have been connected to the wider resistance movement and the struggle of Myanmar’s artists, many of whom used their platforms to speak out after the coup.

For the Myanmar community in Sydney, as well as film lovers who value meaningful international cinema, this premiere is more than a movie screening. It is a chance to come together, support Burmese storytelling, and reflect on the courage of ordinary people living through extraordinary times.

The Sydney premiere will take place for one day only, with three screening sessions available:
