Arabic version: ترامب يدعي أن توقيع اتفاق إيران مقرر غدًا
US President Donald Trump announced via his Truth Social account that an initial agreement to end the US-Israeli war with Iran is “scheduled to get signed tomorrow.” This declaration contradicts an earlier statement from Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, who indicated that a memorandum of understanding would not be signed on Sunday and that negotiators would not be traveling to Geneva immediately.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump claimed that once the deal is signed, the Strait of Hormuz would be “OPEN TO ALL.” The announcement coincides with Trump’s 80th birthday and follows a series of contradicting statements from both US and Iranian officials regarding the anticipated agreement.
While Trump emphasized that the agreement would prevent nuclear armament and involve no financial transactions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that the initial memorandum would serve merely as a starting point for future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. He clarified that the signing would result in an immediate pause in fighting, but that Iran and Oman would continue to administer the Strait of Hormuz.
The diplomatic activity comes in the wake of escalating tensions between the US and Iran, with recent strikes exchanged between the two nations. This period of negotiation follows a previous war initiated by the US and Israel on February 28, as talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program were ongoing. Trump has stated his intention to reach a deal that would exceed the previous 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which he withdrew in 2018.
Despite the ongoing discussions, officials from both sides have expressed that no final terms have been established. Trump reiterated his hope that the process would conclude smoothly, while also hinting at unspecified alternatives should negotiations fail.
