Arabic version: المجتمع ينعى الفتاة البيرث هانيا أحمد بعد إطلاق النار المأساوي
Hania Ahmed, a nine-year-old girl from Perth, was fatally shot in Pakistan last week during a police incident that has left her family and community in shock. Hania was on holiday with her family in the city of Chakwal when the shooting occurred, as local police mistook the victims for armed robbers.
According to ABC News, the principal of the Australian Islamic College, Abdullah Khan, described Hania as a “happy, bubbly, friendly girl” who was excited to attend school. He expressed hope for a fair investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, acknowledging the profound loss felt by Hania’s family and the school community.
During the incident, Hania and her family were reportedly held at gunpoint by robbers demanding their jewelry. When local police arrived, a gunfight ensued, leading to chaos. In an attempt to escape, Hania’s family entered their car but were mistakenly targeted by police, resulting in Hania’s death and injuries to her father and brother.
Adeel Ahmed, Hania’s father, is recovering from his injuries, while her brother remains in the hospital in stable condition. The family plans to stay in Pakistan until he fully recovers. The Chakwal District Police have stated that an officer involved in the incident has been arrested, and a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has been formed to ensure a thorough inquiry.
In response to Hania’s death, the Australian Islamic College has offered counseling services to students and staff. A special assembly was held to support Hania’s peers as they process this tragic event.
