Arabic version: الدفاع يجادل في قضايا مصداقية في قضية اعتداء دونالدسون
The defense for Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has declared that the two women accusing him of childhood sexual abuse are “not sufficiently reliable” for a guilty verdict. During the trial at Newry Crown Court, defense barrister Kieran Vaughan KC highlighted significant and fundamental issues with the credibility of each complainant, as Donaldson faces 18 sex abuse charges, including one count of rape, allegedly committed between 1985 and 2008. According to BBC News, Donaldson has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Vaughan urged the jury to focus on the evidence presented rather than outside influences. He characterized one complainant as a “very, very unreliable witness” and claimed that her testimony was not a safe basis for a guilty verdict. He pointed out that she had omitted critical details in her police interview and suggested that her account of events was influenced by her own perceptions rather than objective truth.
Further, Vaughan contested specific allegations made by Complainant A, arguing that her confusion about the events undermined her credibility. He claimed that her assertions regarding inappropriate behavior lacked any semblance of reliability and described a key incident as a “misunderstanding.”
The trial also touched on Lady Eleanor Donaldson, who faces separate charges related to the case but is currently deemed unfit to participate in a conventional trial due to mental health issues. Her barrister, Ian Turkington KC, emphasized the need for the jury to ensure that justice is served and that the prosecution’s case lacks sufficient clarity and evidence. He also raised concerns regarding the timing of the allegations and the reliability of the complainants’ memories over such an extended period.
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson continues to deny all allegations, asserting that the claims against him are unfounded and lacking in credibility.
