Qantas has confirmed plans to introduce non-stop flights from Sydney to London starting in October 2027. This initiative marks the airline’s commitment to enhancing travel options and is part of its ambitious “Project Sunrise” program, which aims to make long-haul travel more efficient.

According to SBS News, the new service will cut the traditional stopover on the “Kangaroo Route,” offering a direct flight that lasts approximately 20 hours. Tickets for this route are expected to go on sale in February 2027, as announced by Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson during an event in Toulouse, France.

The airline plans to utilize modified Airbus A350-1000ULR jets for this service. Each aircraft will accommodate 238 passengers across four cabin classes: First Class, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy, and will be equipped with an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank to enhance its range. This fleet overhaul is part of a broader strategy initiated in 2017, focusing on developing aircraft capable of ultra-long-haul flights.

Hudson emphasized that the goal of Project Sunrise is to transform what was once a five-day journey into a single flight lasting between 19 to 21 hours. The airline aims to attract travelers willing to pay a premium for the convenience of non-stop service, having previously achieved a similar pricing strategy on its Perth-London route.

While the launch of these flights represents a significant investment for Qantas, analysts predict a positive market response. The airline expects that Project Sunrise could contribute over $A400 million annually to its earnings. However, competition from Gulf carriers like Emirates is anticipated as they seek to maintain their market share in long-haul travel.
